Understanding E.164: The Standard of Global Telecom Routing

In modern web development, handling international customer phone numbers can quickly become a routing and storage nightmare. Between country codes, trunk prefixes, varied lengths, and spacing formats, standardizing inputs is critical. That is where E.164 comes in.
What is the E.164 Standard?
E.164 is an international public telecommunication numbering plan defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). It dictates that a phone number must have a maximum of 15 characters, structured strictly with:
- A leading plus sign (
+) to denote international access. - A 1-to-3 digit country calling code (e.g.,
1for North America,33for France). - A national subscriber number, which includes any local area codes.
Crucially, E.164 numbers contain no spacing, parentheses, dashes, or dots. For example, a US number like (555) 123-4567 translates to +15551234567 in E.164.
Why is it Critical for Database Storage?
Storing phone numbers in a unified E.164 format simplifies database queries and prevents duplicate contact records. Furthermore, major SMS gateways and messaging APIs (like Twilio, Vonage, or AWS SNS) require phone numbers to be inputted strictly in E.164 format. If your application sends numbers in national local formats, they will fail to route.
